"""Mortality from coronary heart disease and cancer (CHD) in a cohort of 4000 peptic ulcer patients, half of whom received external beam radiation, was compared to the U.S. population. Risks for organ specific cancers and CHD were compared between irradiated and nonirradiated peptic ulcer patients, and dose-response relations were modeled taking into account co-factors such as age, gender, and tobacco smoking habits. Increased risks for cancers of the stomach, pancreas and lung were related to radiation exposure as well as CHD.""" |
